About Us

Who we are

The NBN has been a contentious issue since construction started in 2013. Ballarat’s first NBN streets were activated in February 2014. From the outset there was confusion and misleading information that saw many of Ballarat’s residents & business owners frustrations get to boiling point.

Over the last 4 years, We have been answering a LOT of questions about the NBN and everyday more and more people are asking. Thats why this site exists. We'd like to answer your questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

At the time the NBN was active, I was a sales rep for Commander. I dealt with many businesses helping them make the switch from the traditional copper lines provided by Telstra. Since then, quite a bit has changed with the NBN and has become even more confusing to some.

Ballaratnbn.com.au is a Western Tech Solutions website. Western Tech Solutions services computers for clients throughout the Ballarat, Ballan, Bacchus Marsh & Melton regions. We have had a raft of experience with the NBN & can assist you with your NBN questions.

A Fibre to the premises (FTTP) connection is when high speed fibre connection is run directly to your home or business. A connection of this type will have an NBN box normally connected to the outside of the premises. There is also normally an NBN modem inside the home with the offer of a backup battery attached to provide phone lines when power is cut to the premises. FTTP offers the fastest of the common technologies with speeds up to 100mbps download and 40mbps upload.
A fibre to the Node (FTTN) refers to a fibre connection terminating at a different location to the premises. The final connection is run via the copper lines the NBN was intended to replace. FTTN does have a drawback. Its maximum speed is capped at 25/5 as opposed to the 100/40 available from a FTTP connection.
Fixed wireless connections are used mainly in low density areas. An NBN wireless connection generally terminate at a tower or base station and then relays an ‘over the air’ connection to waiting premises with a fixed NBN receiving unit. A fixed wireless solution will offer speeds up to 25/5 and are not required to keep phone lines active as with FTTN & FTTP connections.
Fibre to the basement (FTTB) is mostly found at places with multiple connections required. The fibre connection will run directly to the premises, such as FTTP. From this central input point, the connection is then run to rest of the way using the existing infrastructure, similar to FTTN. FFTB connections are generally found in apartment blocks, shopping centres & business centres.

The best way to check availability and technology type is to enter your address at the NBNCO website or MYNBN.INFO

Once an area is declared ‘ready for service’ in a fixed line area, you must order the NBN within 18 months or you will lose your phone line and internet connection.

If your location is NBN ready, you can contact any telecommunications provide to discuss their plans.

Which is the best NBN provider?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Each Telco provides different pricing and different levels of service. Someone wanting cheapest possible would have different requirements to a medium to large business.

What do I do if my NBN box is beeping?

If your NBN box is beeping, check the lights on it and see if the battery light is RED. If the battery light is red, you may need a replacement battery.
